It is #SupportDontPunish Day – a time to call on our leaders for drug policies based on health and human rights. This is an opportunity to reach out to NSW Attorney General, Mr Mark Speakman, and ask him and his Government to urgently respond to the recommendations of the NSW Ice Inquiry report. The time for change is now!

Dear Attorney General, I write to you in support of drug policies based on health and human rights for #SupportDontPunishDay. It has been 18 months since the Ice Inquiry report and its recommendations were published. This thorough report made a number of strong recommendations to your Government on ways to improve our drug laws and access to treatment. This is an opportunity for NSW to bring our state into closer alignment with every other State and Territory (except Queensland) in Australia that have modernised their drug laws. It would also bring us closer to evidence-based, best practice reforms being implemented across the world. Our current laws cause harm to people in our communities and further perpetuate the shame and stigma surrounding drug use and dependency. Our laws are a reflection on us and our society and they are harsh, punitive, judgmental, discriminatory, isolating and outdated The time has come to acknowledge the need for a change in our drug laws to better reflect society’s values and expectation. We need sensible, fair, evidence-based solutions that are more in-line with community values and that will provide better outcomes and support for individuals and their families - particularly young people and those from First Nations communities.  The community’s support for reform is significant. The 2019 National Drug Strategy Household Survey indicated more than two-thirds of Australians supported  NON-criminal responses to deal with personal use of illicit drugs including heroin, cocaine and ice.  This is not a fringe issue: mainstream Australia wants reform.  It’s now up to you, Mr Speakman.
